it's sadly true, here in oslo where short-distance island ferries are electric, one gets taken by the huge electric shark that lives in the fjord every few weeks. It's a worthy sacrifice

I believe that. It's really quite a quandary. You fall in the fjord which is a bit nippy and then you realise your dilemma; do you try to get back on board with the yuge electric shock risk or do you swim away knowing the 1000s of great white sharks that bask in the waters around Oslo is homing in?

Go and read the history of the Luddites not a simplistic dictionary definition - itself based on false claims about the Luddites. They weren't opposed to technology - they were 'mechanics' themselves but opposed to the loss of control of technology. A very different thing.
