The storyline with Calliope in "The Sandman" disturbed me. But, as the article said, it seemed at the time it was intended to invoke empathy for the victim and disgust at her tormenter.

Thankfully they apparently weren't. PTerry & Gaiman were - as I hear - friends early in their career & then just people who'd been friends in the past & drifted apart - so PTerry was nice about Gaiman.
