my scorching mike tomlin take is the steelers have had mediocre to bad quarterbacks for the last six seasons and he’s managed to get to the playoffs four times in a division with lamar jackson and joe burrow so he’s probably not the problem and in fact is probably why their floor is so high

Stop making excuses for the elevated mediocrity that the Steelers have become. It's time for change.
How did Goff get to Detroit?
How did Peyton get to Denver?
Other than that, you draft them.
Getting 9-10 wins a season doesn't place a team high enough in the draft to get a QB. And the Steelers don't tend to make splash moves with trades or free agency, so...
Change needs to happen.
Peyton became available because he got hurt and the colts had the number 1 overall pick. He signed as a free agent. Was there some Super Bowl caliber free agent QB out there everyone missed?
Not great examples.
Because getting someone in a trade or via free agency sure sounds like "bringing them in"to me.
Other than the draft, what other avenue is there?
I really don't get your point.
Goff is leading probably the best offense in the league, and Peyton won a Super Bowl for the Broncos.
So who do they get for QB?
If you never suck (something he refuses to do) you never draft top 5.
All have been fails. 3 years after Ben & 6 years past when plans should have begun, there is no clear answer at QB for the future
His defenders will now use this failure as another excuse for him
He is never held accountable for anything
These kind of making excuses for failure is why we are stuck in mediocrity
Head coaches aren’t given QBs. They are responsible for developing them
This is the reason teams replace head coaches. No other coach is expected to be gifted a HOF QB
And then there is Mike Tomlin
That is mediocrity.
No coach in any organization survives that. Except in Pittsburgh because “we don’t fire the head coach”
Mahomes & Allen were drafted by teams picking around 24. They traded up just like the Steelers could
Rams & Lions traded for QBs that were top picks. Steelers could do that too
Lamar went 32nd
Hurts was a 2nd round
Dak was a 4th
Purdy was a 7th
Darnold, Mayfield, Geno Smith all free agents
Burrow, Kyler Murray, Stroud and Daniels had Herbert as top guys that were drafted high?
None of those guys have won much yet.
Forgot Bo Nix I guess. He went 12th. Caleb was from a trade if you count him
It’s historically bad. Not sure any coach has ever had as little success and kept a job that long.
I understand other fan bases accepting non-losing seasons. But the Steelers?
I've been joking that the Vikes (and Broncos') secret plan was for them to have every single other team overpaying for their former QBs.
Seems a lot more like "random good luck" than notably "smart scouting."
But one could easily argue that Brady was an outlier. And he was.
Looking at everybody over 50 years shows that the patterns are weak.
Some things are just inherently very hard to predict.
But this upsets me. The Tomlin era has turned our fans into this. Doubting the franchise can even compete for titles
The Steelers are the most successful sports franchise of the last 50 years & our fans now believe we can’t win because the coach isn’t given enough talent
Wish we would
Wasn’t as great as you would think
You can win with a mid QB and competent running game. If you have a great O line and good defense.
He hasn’t had a decent line in years. That’s on the front office not the coach.
Wilson was simply awful down the run in this year. Down to simple clock management stuff he should be aware of routinely on the field - going down in bounds for example.
🙂
0-4.
That's not just bad QBs, that's bad all around and THAT starts at the top.
Change is needed.
Drafted QB 32nd overall, literally every team passed on him
Drafted Qb in second round, literally every team passed on him
Traded up from 25 to 10 which means literally every team could have drafted him
And Joe Burrow who didn’t make the playoffs
But...i don't like tanking
When you don't, the limit is the sky
Without a true franchise QB, the Steelers have virtually no shot of getting past the divisional round of the playoffs
The job of developing/solving the QB position is the head coach
His failure isn’t an excuse to retain him
Those other teams developed a QB and the head coach got to keep their job
If you say Kenny Pickett I will laugh my ass off.
If he can’t do it. Get someone who can.
I get it, you’re frustrated being stuck in perpetual 10-7 and first round exit land. But he’s not your primary problem. If you wanna blow it all up, just say that.
Kyle Shanahan has been to 2 superbowls with Jimmy Garapolo and Brock Purdy.
If you think those guys are any better than Kenny Pickett, I will laugh my ass off.
This isn’t Madden. Players don’t come with a rating
I’d love to have him as my teams coach.
But in the NFL I don’t understand why it’s continually debated, if you don’t have an elite QB you cannot go deep in the playoffs.
I mean outliers with all time defenses have happened but extremely rare.
Get him a QB
85 bears also.
But it’s also why those teams win, then don’t make it back.
I venture to say the 2023 49ers might end up looking like that also.
Over the hill Wilson
Fields
Kenny Pickett
Mitch trubinsky
Mason Rudolph
Over the hill Big Ben
Devon Hodges
Same thing happened to Cowher until he got his QB. Lost the QB with O’Donnell. Languished in mediocre for 8 yrs till Ben.
But like we are nit picking.
What really you need is generational QB (Mahomes) or top 12 qb/system fit who elevates in big games.
Tomlin has deep playoff runs and a SB win with younger Big Ben. As be. Aged his runs fell shorter and since he’s had 🗑️ QBs
If you had your druthers you take like 15/16 guys total in the NFL?
It’s a hard spot.
Pitt has tried with Rudolph and Pickett… those 2 specifically just don’t have it.
I'm starting to think all my daydreaming about winning a Superbowl isn't in the cards.
Maybe Rogers will be somebody's hero. 🫤
And we’re still paying for him.
My team (GIANTS) are significantly worse off.
Tomlin wanted Russ Wilson
Tomlin wanted Justin Fields
Why would we blame the GM that retired three years ago?
Please fire him, you idiot Yinzers.
The offensive line was very inconsistent in protection.
You could see how uncomfortable he was.
We never win with Tomlin as coach.
Marty Schottenheimer went 101-58-1 (.634) and got to the playoffs 7 times in 10 years. They let him go because he couldn’t win in the playoffs
One of those coaches was Hall of Famer Dick Vermeil
I know it doesn’t feel like it sometimes but there are worse things than winning 10-12 games and getting to the playoffs every year
Tomlin is a great coach. And we are so lucky to have him
But the interesting part is that they say Tomlin is one of the greatest coaches around & would get a job in a sec but they seem terrified for him to leave Pittsburgh
They say the front office fails him but then why would he stay in Pittsburgh?
He won’t change. Refuses to admit he is wrong on anything
Good but not great
If you're gonna fire him, you'd better have a rock solid backup plan. If the plan is "3-4 year rebuild" then you'd better be damn good at drafting.
