“Doubles down” on Palestinian children, as if it were something illicit, or a cynical gambit, to defend child victims of genocide. The vulgarity of the press is repellent, though not as much as their complicity in transcribing the murderous wish list of “some online critics”.

IMO it's a journalistic tic; at my insistence the style guide where I work has an entry discouraging the use of "double down" to mean "restate the same position as earlier" because so many reporters do it. I guess it sounds like it adds drama.
