They've since had lots of conversations to address this as a family, but having such an inequitable system put kids in a place to draw really bad conclusions.

All they did was end HCC for less fortunate kids. The ones with means will go to a private school.

Exactly. SPS needs to see what Bellevue did. They asked parents what would it take to get their kids to go public and private school parents said more access to HCC and they delivered. Their enrollment is up

I have heard SPS has always despised the Option program. They have wanted all kids of all levels in the same classroom since day 1. I don’t know why, but just know that’s their plan. The option schools & k-8s had room to expand and SPS wants to close them

There's still a community of people trying to hold SPS accountable because we believe in the value of public schools. But yeah, lots who are fine with private have made that choice. Plenty more would bail to private if they could afford it. Some opt for charter, of course.

We are going the other direction: private → public. For our older kid, the neighborhood public (non HC) went to pieces in 2021, so private elementary was our only option. Literally no contact from the teacher the entire year.

Our younger kid, in HC, had the opposite experience at TM. Extremely amazing community with tons of support and engagement. Now comparing the two communities (public v private) and the private one is SO weird. A couple amazing people, but mostly weird/stuffy/entitled people. It's barely a community.

Yeah, so ironically the most socioeconomically diverse private schools are the religious ones. My husband went through Christian school and is very opposed to that option. But independent private is $30k+ for elementary/middle. HS? $45K+ I've known some of those fams and get the same snooty vibes.

That is *rough* to hear. Yikes. Like those moments when my kid has gone a little too far into a YouTube rabbit hole and I have to pull him back to reality.
