My assistant, Kiki, judging America hard right now. #cat #camera

Another reason to boycott Starbucks: today's layoffs gutted key infrastructure engineering teams--the folks who know all the internal systems & how to fix them--& eliminated the internal help desk. Functions will be outsourced, employees apparently are to train replacements per severance agreement.

Spent the weekend on Whidbey Island for Langley Mystery Weekend. Tons of bird song this morning, so I to took my camera on a walk. Definitely heard more than I saw, but this spotted towhee and a song sparrow were proudly posing and singing 🪶 #USbirds #LangleyWA #towhee #songsparrow #wildlife

Came across this very vocal Seller's jay on today's walk. 🪶 #USbirds #thursjay #lincolnparkSEA #westseattle #fauntleroy

Happening now: protesters are outside the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago this evening. People are in line to see House of Reps Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for an event tonight promoting his recently released book. Crowd chanting at them, "we don't need a book tour!"

From 2021 tree canopy assessment: Canopy loss due to development accounts for only 0.229% of our total tree canopy (35/15279). Yes, we lose 40% of the trees on redeveloped sites, but those sites are only 1% of the city. Other factors caused the greatest loss (220 acres), not housing development.

Spotted towhees are not rare at all in Seattle, but in my experience they're usually pretty shy. This vibrant male, though, was very curious about me when I walked by, and escorted me along the trail. 🪶 #USbirds #lincolnparkSEA #westseattle #fauntleroy #towhee #birdsofseattle

Poor FCA! Their declining relevance is visible in decreasing membership count and revenue, creating a budget shortfall. If only they had a way to bring in more potential members than are dying off... 🤔

Fauntleroy Community Association somehow failing to serve anyone's needs, NIMBY, urbanist, or in between. They've realized NIMBYism is a bad brand now, with similar nbhd orgs getting deservedly called out. But that NIMBY reflex is still strong & they're adrift. westseattleblog.com/2025/02/zoni...

"Just" a barred owl I stumbled upon off an inner trail in the park this morning. If you listen with sound on, you'll hear a raven pair calling to each other, and an Anna's hummingbird chastising the owl. Plus kids playing and a dog barking, because city park. 🪶 #lincolnparkSEA #birdsofseattle #owl

Sisters are doin' it for themselves Female downy woodpecker and female northern flicker visiting the suet. 🪶 #birds #USbirds #birdsofseattle #westseattle #backyardbirding #wildlife #canon #sigma #woodpeckers #stayingsane

Is it #caturday if I'm not embarrassing my most awkward cat? No. I need an outlet for *all this*, so Kiki will have to take some of my frustration in the form of unflattering photos.

I genuinely hadn't heard of Hawthorne Hills (I came up through Federal Way and Beacon Hill and wasn't exposed to the Frasier types). Looked it up on a map and holy cow, the layout and street names alone ooze NIMBY energy. Is it the Seattle NIMBY singularity. That circle... Like an all-seeing eye...
