The Christmas tree has arrived on Trafalgar Square! It's a gift to the people of London from the people of Oslo. A tree has been given annually since 1947. Thank you our Norwegian friends π³π΄ π

Meanwhile at Downing St, they are taking no chances with a new younger cat around.... Larry would never knock it over (or at least wouldn't admit it) but these young kittens....
Perhaps you don't remember the Italian Christmas tree in Rome installed about 5 years ago: it was called "spelacchio" (skinny-isch) from the people in town, because it arrived dried and half dead.
Italy is not very well set, but we have always had a lot of fun from our disgraces.
The Downing Street tree will be from a Christmas tree farm Knighton in Powys I heard on the radio yesterday. You'll be able to cause hovoc in that one @LarrytheCat
Edinburgh receives one too. It always stands at the top of The Mound, just off Princes Street. It's a beautiful link between the countries.
I think a few other places receive one too.
That will be EASY to knock over! π± It's an anorexic tree.. You and your PUSSE have it easy these days... Even the Elephants in the Zoo won't play with that...
I have been there for the lighting of the tree once. It was raining and the lights wereβ¦not inspiring. Hopefully the decorations are a bit more elaborate these days
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also donate a smaller tree for the main courtyard of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Itβs very easily accessible from No.10! π
And despite the fact that it is a gift.. let's start the annual moan fest about a branch or 2 that is less than perfect after being cut down and a trip of hundreds of miles ! Ungrateful pricks!
What about loss of CO2 sequestration because they cut down super old & super large pine tree, Larry? Thatβs not a good or thoughtful gift because of Climate Emergency. Better they donate $$ in UK public name to climate or eco cause in UK or even better in global south. We all must be wise green π πΌs!
As long as we make sure we regrow forests at the same or higer rate that we take them down, its no problem.
AFAIK, theres more forests in the UK and central europe than there has been in about a century. More could always be done, for example the old growth forests should be protected better etc.
*when I say its no problem I mean its not a catastrophe. Cutting down a forest always has issues on the ecosystem but even that can be solved with not cutting huge areas in one go but selectively going in and taking a tree here and there. Its less efficient but better for the forest.
No, we wouldn't want endless arguments at PMQs about whether they should lean left or right. And if Badenoch becomes PM, would you trust her with a chainsaw?
The Lord Mayor of London and the (more practically-dressed) Mayor of Oslo did pretend to cut it down before handing over to specialist forestry workers.
I remember Dad telling us about it when we were children and told us it wasn't just a tree like any other tree, but the friendship tree from the Norwegain people and we should never forget that

The Norwegians gift it to us in thanks for our efforts in defeating fascisim. We are now the conduit by which the fascists will again threaten Europe.
We re putting our own in place as we speak, as well π²β€οΈ
Not great for the planet is it?
If we need a tree thereβs Hooruva in Scotland that donβt require much transport β¦.
Bah humbug I know but come onβ¦.
Same goes for dead flowers, and animals (so-called food and clothing).
I'll get me coat πββοΈ
Don't they like us anymore π
I think a few other places receive one too.
Itβs a long walk for a cat

Nice free holiday for that guy.
After Brexit, I'm impressed that they don't just leave a note, saying we weren't in when they tried to deliver.
