Speaking as a Seattleite, Ichiro was basically a pool shark of a player. He'd say, "third pitch, over first base, in the gap" the same way a hustler would say "off the right, left, then back, corner pocket".

CC spent so much time playing through injuries on the Yankees that it's easy to forget how good he was in the Midwest as a young buck. His 2008 was ridiculous, pitching every fourth day down the stretch with the Brewers' playoff chances on his back. 11-2, 1.65 ERA, 7 CG, 3 SO, 130 IP after July 7.

Your thread is mostly spot on but disagree on the best non-Mo closer bit. In my view, that’s Eck by a sizable margin. And I’d probably put Lee Smith, Trevor Hoffman, and [ducks] Troy Percival above him as well. Quisenberry is an interesting debate but the job was so different then.

* Jones is a weird case, he fell off a cliff at 30 and so much of his value is derived from defense, where we have less reliable metrics, but he is one of the best center fielders in history and I'll be happy if he gets in
