Comparing Vetinari in the early books to later Vetinari can be a little jarring perhaps, but young Vetinari to later Vetinari would've been an interesting arc.

But so what! As Terry's writing evolved and got more explicitly empathetic, that's the Vetinari we want anyway.

I definitely wish adult Lord Downey was a bit more afraid of Vetinari, though. But I’m not sure if Downey is self-aware enough to really think through the peril he is in with his former target now his boss and tyrant.

I don't think Vetinari, young or less-young, would be a good front-and-center. He's a man of thoughts & words, and he's very effective at steering people -- but turning that into a gripping story would be very high art indeed. Even in NW, when he's a man of action, he's a man of thoughtful action.

Nice touch giving him an aunt instead of a parent. I mean, she might not really be his aunt! Keeps the mystery (Is he a wizard? Was he hatched?) but still shows that intrigue has always been his thing
