That's very close to what's it like being a reptile/snake owner, they have 3 categories of things, What can I eat, What wants to eat me, and Everything else, and your job as an owner is to make yourself known as everything else
I love me some Discworld. Discovered as a teen I'm ashamed to say I'm such an uncultured soul it wasn't until several readings and years later I realized Wyrd Sisters is spoofing Macbeth 😅😆
I think this is why I can still enjoy my Discworld collection because everytime I return another penny drops😆
you're not alone there. Rereads are frequently accompanied by "oh I get it now" moments.
My most recent was finding that the glooper was a real machine 😊 (Phillips machine)
The book I'm currently on in my reread. It's been probably over 20 years since I last read it, and it's been so much fun seeing Terry take aim at fairytales again, plus finally getting things like Old (Masculine) River and Samedi Nuit Mort
Knowing what's real is a theme throughout the Witches books. A frying pan is very real. But so is a belief in a queen who never existed when you need a little self confidence boost.
It fits in well with Discworld's stance on belief. Truth, Justice, Mercy, and other important things that don't physically exist still DO exist because people believe in them. Knowing what's real is important as is making intangible important things real by believing in them.
I've come to really look forward to these posts. I'm curious to see whether you'll run out of content sometime between now and the heat-death of the universe.
My 1st book I read in the Discworld series. I still come back to it every now and then and it's just as good after every read. Love the witches so much.
The “you get burned if you stick your hand in a fire” bit has helped me think about how I cope when I’m struggling, but have to put on a brave face to support the vulnerable people I work with. You might be able to put it off for a while, but at some point, you have to let yourself feel the burn.
in a ridiculous fantastical world flying through the stars on the back of a giant turtle, the most no-nonsense grounded group of people were the witches on brooms in pointy hats
and that’s why, as much as I adore Vimes, the witches are probably my favorite overall series as an adult
I’ve often thought that Sam Vimes and Granny Weatherwax are both the answer to the question of how to have power without becoming corrupt when you’re not some kind of saint. (Carrot, of course, is the answer “Be some kind of saint.”)
The Tiffany Aching books are my favorite, as they capture the witches so well. And because I got to experience them through the eyes of my daughter, who was 8 years old at the time.
I just bought the first three for my niece, who just turned 7, but I think I may have overstepped, I need to make sure that a few of the later parts of Books 3 and the start of book 4 (the subject of sex, and the beating of a pregnant girl) are okay for her.... am going to warn my sister anyway.
The third book does start to get a little… rough. It’s executed very well, and my kiddo was fine with it. She was 9 or 10 at that point. I think she understood it, and wasn’t traumatized by it. I hope.
Four starts with the beating of the girl so hard she lost her child — child loss is something that hit our family hard so we need to dodge it for a while yet.
There's a nigh-20 year old Star Wars book called "Boba Fett: A Practical Man" that I think of every time I see a Granny Weatherwax quote. She's just a Practical Lady.
I am reading through the Tiffany Aching books, just reached book four and it's honestly some of the best and most meaningful witches' storytelling, PTerry absolutely did not pull his punches when writing for young people.
Tiffany sticks her hand in a fire without getting burned, because she transfers the heat from one place to another. Thus maintaining equilibrium.
Granny grasps a blade seemingly without being cut, actually she just
waits until she is at home with clean linen, hot water, needle and thread to be hurt.

Somehow, relate to both of them at once here.

To all of that.

I need to re-read Witches Abroad.
