Mmm Obsidian did this in Tyranny as well, as I recall. Personally, I can't say I'm a fan, as it ends up making dialogue feel too... interface-y? Wikipedia-ish? While it does make some information more accessible, it sacrifices immersion to do so.
Or so my gut says. Maybe others disagree.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN Avowed by @obsidian.net has "Dialogue history & lore" available for you when you talk to other characters! 😭
I screamed when I saw it! Cognitive accessibility is so often forgotten, but here it is, so simple and yet so impactful for gamers like me🖤

What does affect my immersion is having to tab out of a game or switch to a mobile device to find out what the random acronyms and bespoke verbs mean.
But, yes, I understand that it's a game.
You have to explicitly call it up, and I appreciate the option so that you don't have to force unnatural dialogue or roll checks for what would be common lore knowledge
Learning a little while gaming can't hurt.
We're not idiots 😬
As for your other point: the evidence often says otherwise, but I'm talking about myself, here.
Also, while I'm at it: Love DAO, love your writing, play it every year since 2010 - and I complained about DAO having 1 social skill since 2010.
WHY 1 SOCIAL SKILLS???? ONE PERSUASION SKILLS!!! OF COURSE I'M GOING TO MAX IT OUT EARLY!!!!
Send my love to Laidlaw and lots of kisses.
I _really_ liked the Owlcat approach, make keywords in the dialogue window bold and colored and show popups on mouse-hover to add the lore depth
This lets me “Yes and” role play with more informed decisions, and encourages me as the player to engage in learning about the world.
And, honestly, this is more about the interface, to me.
Wonder if there’s a more elegant implementation for this approach? 🤔
Maybe it even gives you a little out-of-reality spotlight to monologue. 😎
Maybe this is the advancement of that, fully OOC.
Like when a TV show character goes to his daughter "As a 30 year Air Force Veteran, I think I know about X" which is something he'd never say for the child's but only for the audience.
this saves me a lot of 'shit can i reload because i missed half of the dialogue again' due to missing half of it/it going to fast/having words that i can't place (as ESL)
my immersion isn't better if i have to reload
brain fog is a thing here
My cognitive processing is such that for many things, I can need A LOT of repetition and reminder until it sticks.
It's good to have this feature rather than the notebook I often use when playing RPGs.
The balance between dialogue interaction and lore should be balanced so lore rewards those who know, but the emotions compel on their own.
On the other hand, I appreciate not having to check an out-of-game wiki when something comes up and I can't play for a couple weeks.
Bioware spoiled me.
i sincerely don't remember which game it was tho :/
it took me 20 hours before even noticing there was a button during dialogue so i could check my current conversation like this
I prefer a separate glossary, though.
