I've been playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and wow... so far, it's kind of to JRPG's what Baldur's Gate 3 was to CRPG's. It's beautiful and polished and well-written, and the turn-based combat is so fun!

E33 has a very simple early game and expands from there, so I dont think you will run up against the same wall.
I get the frustration part because it means you can't learn without first taking a beating.
It's definitely more challenging than Paper Mario, but still doable. You can do it!
You take the Pictos, beat 4 battles and you'll learn it's ability as a "Lumina" to then perm equip
So beyond the 3 Pictos you can equip for skills, you can then go over to the Luminas and equip the ones you learned
But each has a points cost to it, so you gotta work with a limit
Then just a matter of equipping Lumina skills you learned to match the build you are going for
Its one crituque I have about the game is that I think it could explain some things better
That or I was just too tired at the time to understand what they told me haha
I was quite a few hours in before I was like "OOOOOH! That's what you do!!" hahah
I think that's what he meant, reaching an audience outside of those who were already into it
as person who loathes both turn based and twitch parry games, I'm playing E33 just for the aesthetics and character depth, and enjoying it immensely
if anything, shoehorning into "unexpectedly good western jrpg" might be underselling it.
kind of like saying Hades was a good roguelike
It has amazing tonal range, too. Sometimes it’s utterly heartbreaking, and then for lengthy periods it’s *really* funny. It’s like watching a magic trick as it moves between those two states.
The fact it moves so deftly from one to the other, for long periods, then moves back, is a joy.
