Public libraries are and have always been the stalwart defenders of free speech and sharing of information.
If you saw a library in a strictly red state, you would see a distinct indifference toward this resource. Also, you would see loyal patrons who will simply refuse to let it die. #libraries

I lived in a town that had an amazing public library and I would use it all the time. Since then I moved and unfortunately here it's just not that great. No English language books, waiting lists to loan anything and no digital library of any kind. You can get old VHS movies, though.

You are right & I should share this more. My son and I vist the library every week. My county libraries offer online book borrowing using an app called Libby. I'm grateful for all they do.

I love my local libraries. Problem is, I’ve been finding that the libraries in ABQ, as most ABQ city departments and agencies, aren’t following NM IPRA law. City Council, Arts & Culture, and the City Clerk told me “the public library is not a public body, according to IPRA”. [series posted today]

None of the offices, agencies, departments, libraries, community centers, even the City Council, etc. are complying specifically with section 7 of the law, “each public body shall designate at least one custodian of public records who shall…” The city clerk argues with me about this.

Sorry if it’s unclear from the titles. It’s the state Inspection of Public Records Act. BTW, thanks for asking about it. I feel like a wonk being so obsessed with this, but if one guy is in charge of all the records for the city, that jeopardizes transparency and accountability. Just the few interactions I’ve had with the 11th floor of City Hall, Mr Keller’s staff concerns me.

I used to live near one that even loaned out kitchen equipment for cooking and baking. And I think one that also loaned lawn equipment. Unbelievably cool stuff

They also have programs for kids and free internet for people that cannot afford it. If nothing else, they are a warm and safe place to spend a little time in, reading or just taking a break from the craziness of life.
