Could it be the multiple SEZs and Freeports sound the UK that contravene EU regulations and would have to be dismantled inconveniencing their corporate backers and future consultancy jobs?

The UK's far-right press have dictated UK policy by manipulating public opinion for a long time. This puts Labour in a catch-22 position, if they do what's best for the country they'll lose the next election and it'll all be reversed. At some point they'll have to grow a spine but it won't be today.

That's pretty much agreeing with me on the cause. I think we can also agree on the solution, Labour should offer a mandate or referendum for rejoining the EU even if it risks a thumping electoral defeat, because it is the right thing to do. It should not be a matter of if, but when.

Rejoin is not a one way track . And not the only option.. closer alignment is always the forward step needed to any lasting plausible and agreed solution.. and that’s what is happening..not across the board, not as fast as we Remain voters would ideally want but definitely the best option right now

"This government" means the current mandate. Watch and see what might be in the next manifesto. I'd be surprised if overwhelming public opinion does not lead to greater alignment (something the millionaire backers of Reform can't promise to their low attainment voters)
