Things are coming apart quickly, so a word to white folk: you’re going to have to get used to property damage if you want to survive. Getting upset protesters set an empty Target on fire & making THAT & not police murder the focus is part of how we got here.

I wrote a whole zine titled White People Hate Protests a few years ago. A project with @carolynchernoff.bsky.social. Nothing has changed. Majority of white people in the U.S. treat protest like East German Figure Skating Judges.those are the facts.

Yep. (Some) white people who are at the very least leery of conventional protest are willing to do actions like #TeslaTakedown. Because it seems fun/safe and it’s still popular in many communities to hate Nazis.

But overall, we need to learn. Perhaps as more white people face direct repression…?

But I think there are many reasons why white people might be much more willing to do that rather than other protests. One is because it feels more like a meetup. Another is because Nazi car dealerships are usually in wealthy white areas away from city centers.

I printed this zine out after my Jewish father-in-law visited and had the nerve to tell my Black & trans teen that "political activism is for useless people to feel powerful" (a Thomas Sowell quote). The only protest leader they "love" is one assassinated over 50 years ago. Safely dead & gone.

Yes, those are the facts. If protesters burn down a Target or a grocery store in a white neighborhood, those people will be wearing MAGA hats the next day, even if they are not pro-Trump now.

They haaaaaaaate the spector of inconvenience too. A friend was summoning imaginary people who would have trouble driving home from work when Philly was tearing it up after the Superbowl like that's a big thing at 11pm on a Sunday. She doesn't even live on that side of the country.

I had a conversation about this with students today. White Americans don't do protests, and historically never have. Montgomery lasted over a year and had hundreds of people giving up their sense of safety and convenience. I don't know of an analogue.

Ride shares and mechanic work and organization and cooking and childcare and all of the rest. All so a boycott would last. The only thing I could think of were some college protests that lasted a couple of weeks.
