Youre joking but that literally happened to my grandma who was split from her siblings after her mom died from the influenza and lived in a tent during the Great Depression.
As a RN serving elderly with health challenges, many on Medicare, & some who have exhausted their life savings so are also on Medicaid, with food insecurity, the nonprofit I work at is suggesting small vegetable gardens, even if only containers gardens on apartment balconies
Plants are very rewarding and life affirming. I planted a garden because I'm job hunting and I expect it to be a rough one. Actually, maybe I should work on propagating herbs for the elderly... Not buying pricey herbs is one way I thrive.
Well-intentioned, but could unintentionally deepen existing inequalities—schools w/ more active communities receive more, while most in need are often overlooked. Instead partner w/organizations rooted in these areas to ensure support is distributed more equitably & help mobilize broader support.
I'm spinning my free repair cafe back up and trying to move it around town instead of always at one location; I'm also hoping to organize more folks who know how to fix things to band together and help our communities.
