This is so great. These are the kinds of problems tech should be solving. Imagine if big tech put focus on ways to mitigate our climate crisis instead of ways to rip off artists and creatives!

I live in San Diego, a county that’s been ravaged by fires as well, and this app is great. It’s REALLY detailed and quickly updated. If you live in a wildfire region, this app is essential!

Aaaaand it was awesome today when we had a fire in our area, a brief evacuation order, etc. This app helped the fam keep calm & informed about the fire, we evacuated before the order/during the 'warning,' and knew fairly quickly all would be well.

Watch Duty is a great resource, and it's cool that there are thoughtful people with a real mission behind it, but the official CalFire website is well organized, up-to-date, and chock full of useful information, too. The state *does* provide a useful tool.

I can only speak for the Sunset fire, but when that one started, & was moving fast, Watch Duty was way better than the government website. They were using the firefighter’s radio comms, which was apparently more efficient than whatever the government is doing.

While I think the Watch Duty app is the best, LAFD has a non paywalled fire map. And you can sign up for alerts through a lot of government pages. Kind of tired of all this anti-government nonsense.

The idea of a purchase is so cynical and lazy. The fact is, someone else could do what the non-profit is doing and sell ads or subscriptions or whatever. There's nothing to really infringe upon, seems like.

But that would take work. Just buying our eyeballs is easier. It's really lame.

That’s my point. “Remove the competition” rather than “win the competition” is lazy. Especially when there’s no apparent scarcity. Anyone could do what the non-profit is doing, with some sort of “we’re doing it better because reasons” angle, if they were willing to do the work.

Watch Duty comes from Sonoma County, not LA, but yes it is great. And our hearts here in the Bay Area go out to our brothers and sisters in LA, glad it is helping.
