It reminds me of all the many outsourcing-insourcing “efficiency” cycles I’ve seen in my corporate career, bundled together with corp raiders/leveraged buyouts.

They come in as “consultants”, advise radical changes that weaken a co., then bring in their own $$$ consultants to “improve” things.

Well, some like what Reagan did with that, and I've heard privatization talk and pointing to how other countries did it. So it wouldn't be as shocking. But NPS and NWS are the kind of thing that'd get mentioned only tongue-in-cheek, joke being they're obviously so far down the list even for them.

Indeed, the fact that Canada, New Zealand, etc. have given us possible models for privately run air traffic control means it makes *less* sense to offer "keep the government in charge, but fire people" as a small-government alternative.

Though to be sure, even the folks who have their serious policy arguments about whatever kind of restructuring things like the air traffic control system, wouldn't be like yeah start randomly firing people and pulling the wires out of the existing system.

It’s beyond bizarre. Tiny money saved upfront, huge downstream costs, something the public notices immediately. It’s the calculation of people who live in extreme isolation from us lumps out here.
