As a Braves fan, I have seen them the most obviously. I’m going with Andruw Jones. He had a good bat but the pure defensive excellence (10 straight GG) in CF helped put 3 pitchers in the Hall of Fame. I think Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz would all say that he made an impact on their careers.

Honestly Jackie Robinson. I feel his legacy is focused on the incredible barriers he broke- and it can be forgotten that he is one of the best second basemen of all time. So- although he is certainly not underrated his actual play on the field might be.

Yes! His career was short, because he wasn't allowed to play until he was 28, but he was a star every single year. He hit for average, had decent power, a high OBP and he fielded brilliantly at several position.

I think a great video on YouTube by Foolish Baseball covers this exact topic. Consistent, though, many great Negro League players and people around those teams say that he was not the best that could’ve been sent.

Had integration occurred 10 years earlier. It’s probably a very different story.

There is an old movie called Soul of the Game. This topic is heavily featured. Even though Jackie wasn't the best, he was the one with the right temperament to be able to handle it. Didn't hurt that he was also an all time great player. But most everyone knows Gibson and Paige were higher regarded

Russell Martin. 54.5 fWAR has him in the same range as Joe Mauer (53.5) and Yadier Molina (55.6). I think he flies under the radar because defense made up a big part of his value, and because he had a bit of a nomadic career, never spending more than 5 seasons with one team in the majors.

As a kid, I happened to be sitting just past the visitors dugout during his first game back at Yankee Stadium and he did not mind jawing with us fans every time he went in and out of to take the field.
