But why should we pander to those who are organised and well-practised and disadvantage the people who’ve used the same 50-slide deck for every talk for years and just skip things on the fly to fit vaguely within time? :-p

Flipped conference: prerecord talks and share ahead of time. Then q&a on site w/ coffee and snack.
I've seen this floated during covid times, but didn't seem to get traction.

They sort of did this for AGU 2021, and it was a disaster. WAY more work for both speaker and conference goer. You have time to record and produce a talk as well as spend the week before the con watching talks? THEN going to the meeting?

Yeah, it probably takes some time figuring out what works best and what doesn't. Might also depend on the size of the conference.

I think the ability to ask a clarifying question, or for the presenter to gauge how the audience is following and adjust would be missed. But maybe that's all dominated by the downsides of live speaking.

I have heard several recorded talks during COVID. The results were horrible. So no. People should learn how to speak freely in front of an audience and get their technical issues straight.

The other angle: while the talk has been reviewed to be interest of all, the Q&A sometimes gets bilateral and other are bored. Dear chair, your job is not over, when the Q&A starts. Don’t let people talk endlessly or give their own “mini-presentation”. This is even more difficult than for the talk.
