I remember queueing up at school here in the UK to have the pre-BCG "daisy" skin test, on more than one occasion. Each time, I had a positive skin reaction to the daisy, so was deemed not to need the BCG itself. Which, as a bit of a needle-phobe, I was very happy about :)

3) For those asking, the majority of the world has used the BCG vaccine against TB… the BCG vaccine also protects against many other bacterial infections too. Up until now, CDC skipped it because US was low risk, and the BCG vaccine leaves a small scar & BCG messes up TB tests.

I'm from Virginia. I had this vaccine in the 80s as a child. My husband also got this vaccine. My great grandfather died from TB (he was a doctor) and my grandmother had been exposed, but was never ill. So, it was available here and somewhat common at that time.

The city of Colorado Springs was a Mecca for TB patients a century ago. The University of Colorado, Colorado Springs occupies what was an enormous TB sanitarium. Hundreds of homes have free standing "mother-in-law cottages" in the back yard to house/isolate relatives with TB.

I was a nurse in the 80’s, worked on a TB unit, masks required at all times, never got TB. I moved, worked on general med floor, patients not tested for TB on admission, no masks required. I got TB, took medicine for 2 years, Public Health clinic visits required by law monthly X2 years. I mask.

You are correct. Well, there is a BCG vaccine (derived from bovine TB) that is used in developing countries that have high rates of TB, but it isn’t effective at actually preventing TB. Yet it is administered to kids mainly to prevent them from getting TB meningitis.
