i’m supposed to be offline today but uh … why are the creators of ila a frosty glide so pro-harry potter & hogwarts legacy on their kickstarter?

just wanted to share for fellow indie lovers who maybe were looking to play this. idk about y’all, but this immediately made me take it off my wishlist.

I mean the original thing was very blatantly just using “like Disco Elysium” as shorthand for “what if my idea and with good writing that people like”. Also maybe didn’t play it considering I can’t fathom playing even some of it and going “ugh, another generic white-guy detective story

"yet another detective story" and "white middle aged man protagonist again" are valid criticism no matter how great Disco Elysium is. But it’s obviously quite bold for someone to say they'd want to make something like it but with a vastly different setting, main character and context.

Those aren’t valid criticisms, they don’t make any sense if you’ve actually played the game. Harry is far from a generic middle aged male protagonist, and the story is really nuanced. It sounds like people are just “judging a book by its cover” instead of playing the game.

detective stories are not that common for it to be a point against DE when the only releases in recent years i can remember is emio and paranormasight (which *is* an established genre that DE doesn't conform to)

Idk about all games coming out but following a detective solving a crime is a very prevalent genre in media as whole. Obviously, as already said above, it's a surface level reading of what DE is even about. But imo still valid to mention if one would want to criticise/try to improve the game.

the genre of a work is not an avenue for criticism when no genre has inherent positives or negatives; only the execution should be judged and DE for all accounts is able to use the genre in an excellent way. you cant "improve" DE by not making it a detective story because its not DE anymore
