Developing deep subject matter expertise in a couple fields has been useful to me because it helped me understand that there are a great many things that I DON’T understand at a deep level; and that my knowledge is not necessarily transferable across fields.

This is what I think of as a specific kind of ignorance that heavily affects young white guys who work in tech. It says “i don’t know about this, so I assume no one else does either.” It’s new to them, so it must be new to everybody!

That expertise did not make me an expert on California housing policy: I had to go to grad school and work in the field for a while before I could have somewhat informed opinions.
If you and I both go to the same college, and both like Coldplay, we must be friends.
They think they understand the world better, and therefore, they should be the ones with the power to control it.
It makes them good soldiers because they don't question things like killing, putting themselves in harms way or committing coups.
