Nothing prevents states from increasing standards. The DOE provides guidance on minimums and required services, like those for special needs. They also fund poor districts more than they can themselves. Decreasing bloat is good, yes better education is good, but I think this will accomplish neither.

I can't speak to that - and like I said, decreasing bloat is good. Certainly agree that administrative overhead is too high broadly speaking - but eliminating an entire agency w/o a defined replacement/augmentation plan is shortsighted and causes alarm.

The defined replacement program is to go back to the states which had better outcomes before the DOE was established. The education system under the DOE is bloated with administrative spend and the quality of education has gotten worse since inception. These are valid reasons to move away.

Sounds reasonable, until you realize that part of the reason we have the DOE is because some states were quite happy to put all of their white kids into private or segregated schools and provide no decent public education to the non-white residents. The DOE’s mission is to improve educate for all.

Isn't the big problem with these types of districts that have the most disadvantaged poor outcome students funding and corruption related? The most money goes there with the highest administrative staff cost and still the poorest outcomes. How is that good?

Before DoE no one was even measuring outcomes. That’s why common core was enacted to make schools accountable. All DoE driven. Is there some admin burden? Yes. Corruption? Not really. Some cheating, yes. As with any program, you work to fix the small problems not safety the entire enterprise.
