I agree very much with this. Americans, in particular, tend to have an almost cartoonish view of what authoritarianism is like - and that can make it hard to appreciate the moment we are in and how far along we are democratic backsliding.

What is going on in America now is more terrifying. The gang in power has less concern for the rule of law, less patriotism, less empathy. No foreign democracy can save America.
I mean, the motherfucker fled a communist totalitarian regime only to vote for a fascist one here.
