If we ‘question’ some debt and thus don’t pay it (because doing so would cause us to go above the debt ceiling) then it doesn’t get paid and so we would be in default on that debt.

Since 2010, the debt limit/ceiling political theater has become a sideshow that distracts from the ongoing failure of the larger budget process. The absurd has been normalized. What is its current function other than this gamesmanship and forestalling more social spending?
What if it is more taxbreaks and more subsidies to those who dont deserve? What if such gamesmanship is about promoting deportation.. kind of like payback for"loss of migrant labor" [like the govt did for "loss of slaves" ]?
The fact that it could even be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations counsels against its continuation. Taxes, subsidies, and other policies should be evaluated on their own merits.
You're correct that that's why they want to do it, but it doesn't change the fact that it's the right thing to do and will improve negotiations in the long run.

Trump really didn't run on any platform other than "I hate who you hate" but he did talk about how horrible Biden handled the economy and soaring debt. I'm not an expert, but wasn't the debt limit a (Republican) tool to manage the debt?
