It's abhorent on so many levels, naming one feels like a gross understatement. Still, I tend to self-publish as a beloved hobby, and for a little coffee and gambling scratch. This will drown out so many authors' labour, titanic labour of love, in AI trash.

The wound to the arts is heartbreaking.

It sucks but I’m afraid the people who pay attention to this are mostly “in-groups” while the vast majority of people don’t particularly care as long as they get something entertaining out of it, as such it will be the norm.

Low quality, cheap mass produced goods will always win out in then end.

Oh absolutely. I’m firmly in that camp and I’m staring down an industry that puts profit over the art it pretends to actually value. It’s really, really sad and disheartening. But that’s not going to stop me from trying.

Nor should you and you’re right, most of these slop won’t be remembered and many creatives do aim to make a mark through their works but as you’ve said, the industry is about making money. I’m just drawing parallels between this and every industry that had to compete with mass produced slop.

This slop won’t be remembered. It will have no legacy besides being clumped in with a monolith of other cliche trash that feeds on itself.

The things that people write with intention are remembered.

Maybe it's changed, but I take heart in articles where actual bean counters look at algo-gen use (I steadfastly refuse to call it "AI") and found it's too expensive to make an actual profit. Unfortunately, CEOs seem to be the type that needs to touch the hot stove five times to learn.

People always try easy and counterproductive stuff before they figure out how something can be effectively used. I’m not hearing clamoring for “just publish the slush pile”, which could also get thousands of books in a year published without edit.
