the priest I used to work with when I did youth ministry back in the early 2000s was a real early adopter of the “bringing your diet weirdness into this sacred time does not make you a holier person, what are you actually DOING IN THE WORLD” philosophy and I always really appreciated that

I want to acknowledge the above & hold it in tension: when I fast (even from just 1 meal a week), I notice a clear improvement in my patience. This doesn't happen for me with any other Lenten observance. Fasting can involve "doing in the world"
—call reps every Monday
—small weekly donation to a different Gaza family or other mutual aid
—EXTREME social media limits to avoid doomscrolling
—block on sight instead of arguing with trolls
—make sure all your vaccines are up to date
—book club or discussion group at your church
like a “can you go 40 days and nights without giving Bezos any money” challenge
