1) I just started reading "A Bold and Hardy Race of Men": The Lives and Literature of American Whalemen" by Jennifer Schell and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I assigned her article to my students last week and they enjoyed it.

The movie "The Man Without A Country" made a big impression on me as a kid.

That's also true on the 1970s remake of "Captains Courageous". I don't remember too many details, TBH, but wasn't the Spencer Tracy* version.

This is a great movie, I especially love the opening scenes with the Quakers and the whale oil markets of Nantucket.

I will give a shout out to Eric Dolin’s, Leviathan, which is the best single volume in whaling currently in print. Margaret Creighton, Rites and Passages is also excellent.

Not exactly sure if this is what you mean, but there are two popular maritime histories I've read recently that I think are brilliant: Ian Holt, "Six Frigates" and "Indianapolis" by Vincent and Vladic. Among the best books I've ever read, in both cases.

1. I grew up near Mystic Seaport and went there to meet up with relatives in the outdoor sections near the end of lockdown. Being able to compare the 1980s-1990s museum and the recent museum, they have actively diversified their stories. It now shows Whaling an an international history. #HATM

1) I think it is interesting that there are so many misconceptions about the ocean/sea. We haven't been to the bottom of the ocean completely, there is that huge biomass island, Columbus got lost, etc.

1) Not a history book but a recommended novella using the ocean to touch upon history and give voice to the oppressed: The Deep by Rivers Solomon, with Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes.
