JUST IN: France has a new Prime Minister.
Macron chose Michel Barnier, a conservative politician from the LR party.
This makes explicit the long-tacit alliance between Macronists + conservatives. *And* Macron is choosing someone based on thinking far-right (RN) won't bring down.

Anyway you are absolutely right
Were I in the NFP, this would be a bridge too far.
This is hard to stomach.
Barnier's LR (right) have roughly 40 seats. Macronists only have roughly 170. Even combined, that's far from the majority of 277.
RN has 140.
It’s going to be much easier now for the NFP to tie France’s right-wing to Macron’s failures.
Macron was trying to find someone who'd avoid being taken down (=it's called "being censored").
So then he searched for another name... and that left him calling RN leader Marine Le Pen to see if she'd immediately 'censor' them, making her the arbiter: https://lemonde.fr/politique/article/2024/09/05/emmanuel-macron-erige-le-rassemblement-national-en-arbitre-entre-les-candidats-a-matignon_6304511_823448.html
He adds, 'we're seeing a new republican front — this time against the left.'
That's how their enabling helped normalize the fascist extreme we now face.

Le Pen had clearly said she'd censor earlier names until now, including another conservative she detests (Betrand).
I am often reminded why.
