A lot of neurodivergent people have difficulty with eye contact, myself included. Eye contact while shaking hands is not a measure of a persons honesty. In fact sociopaths are often super charming and feel no discomfort interacting with people in a dishonest way.

Your father was correct. My mother used to say if you want people to think you’re honest look them in the eye! I was an intensely shy teen who avoided eye contact but this made me force myself to look people in the eye. It was very hard to do initially but honesty is important!!
