I think its statistically improbably that all 128 of the recently discovered moons are collectively in the "new Moon" phase ... but that could also explain why they were hard to notice.

“New Moon” is the term for the phase of the Moon when it’s completely dark.

“128 New Moons” can be interpreted as 128 moons in the “New Moon” phase.

If your eyes are sharp, you can still find it in the night sky too. Because the same face, faces us always, it's not as near dark as the far side of the moon, which is comprised of darker material than the reflective side facing us. The side facing us has bright white rock.
