Two emergency eye operations in 2023 and a further corrective one this year. Some things can wait, eyes are not one of them, without my health insurance I would be blind. HCF were there when I needed them.

Yep and it’s still cheaper than insurance. I self insured all my life. If I needed to see a specialist I paid. If i needed an operation I paid. And I paid the levy.
I now have cancer and get excellent treatment at the GCUH.
And my cardiologist (who I see privately) now bulk bills me
Either i f-ed up my calcs or I'm in the wrong revenue bracket, but for me private health and medicare levy come down to the same price, so might as well pay the private health...
Let's not overlook that the bosses of our health insurers here in Oz are looking at the US & going "Ya know, there's some big $$ in that!" Hence the steady erosion of Medicare & our health system. We can't now claim to have 1 of the best systems in the world. Sadly it's slipping under the radar.
Just had a delayed direct debit from BUPA which has thrown cashflow over next two weeks into deficit meaning cancelled break plans (and partner’s gift also deferred). Bastards all.
