Didn’t read the article and not sure it is about that, but. Usually trees are illegally cut to build something on that land. Which obviously fits the current regime politics full of so called real estate developers as Witkov and Trump.
I don't get it. Why not name the freak who did this? His name was out there when this broke. Samuel Patrick Groft.

I know the value of trees, but I'll be the first to admit that tree law is something I am not terribly brushed up on. At minimum, I'd assume this would be considered a form of vandalism, public disturbance, and/or destruction of public property.
absolutely, they can be charged with all that, but they might also be ordered to pay the cost of planting new trees and related costs. depending on the type of tree and health of remaining trees nearby, it can be pricey. some people have been ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The density of the foliage (i.e. in a Park) obviously plays a role but hey, after years of studies in Europe we have come to the conclusion that any tree is better then none.

Heartbreaking.
LA needs far more trees and greenery in the city--how sad that these precious little ones have been senselessly taken out.
