As a German, this entire thread is amazing to me. I'm too young to have listened to this when it came out, but it's been present in the cultural conscious eversince it released. I had no idea that the song could still be "new" to people haha

German pop music so rarely makes it across the pond to Canada.
Oh right, we got Rammstein.
That's like the last German act I know.
That and maybe Einsturzende Neubauten (sp?), and only because Blixa played with Nick Cave.
More recent German bands, don't know any.

I've been racking my brain for a few minutes and I think Electric Callboy recently became a household name (if you're into heavier stuff) in North America. But you're right of course, especially music with German lyrics hardly ever makes it out of the DACH (Germany - Austria - Switzerland) region.

Oh right, we got the laughably terrible Scorpions and some really baroque metal bands that were quite silly.
Michael Schenker was a thing for a while.
Virtually nobody knew of bands like Can and Neu.
It blows my mind that Neu was doing proto-electropop in 1972.
