Great question! Fuego is special in that it has: a. the neighboring Acatenango volcano where I camped at the same height, and b. a "shoulder" up close that is usually mostly safe. Camp is laterally about 2-2.5 miles away. Depending on the situation, you could launch from either.

Did I expect it? Yes*. Fuego consistently erupts multiple times a day, so I knew one was coming, but didn't expect one this big. Drone battery life is short, so I spent one day timing eruptions, then flew out the next morning when I thought one was about to occur. It happened within 2 mins.

You're not wrong! I wasn't zoomed in at all, so the rocks you see flying by really were that close to the drone. The eruption was larger than I had expected lol. 😬

This is what a slightly smaller eruption of Fuego looked like from further away as I was hiking down from the summit of the neighboring Acatenango volcano (sound on to hear the distant roar - best with pc speakers).
