My single biggest hurdle was finding a good alternative to my use of amazon/kindle. I have solved that with https://bookshop.org
The other thing I guess is that one-stop shopping for All The Things, with fast delivery, is admittedly nice. I don't know how to solve that, just a price to pay?
Thanks for this suggestion!!! This is my biggest problem. I stopped doing paper books in 2008 and love having all my books on my phone kindle app. I will check this out!
Also check https://thriftbooks.com. I've gotten back into paper books, though I still like the occasional ebook. Thinking of trying a Kindle alternative.
for me, it's been the random little stuff that you used to be able to buy locally. (for example, a weird little converter plug, but RadioShack is no more.) I am able to find vendors online elsewhere, and I just get it from them.
I might be paying shipping but on average, it's less than prime.
I can rely on the delivery projection date that, on Amazon, changes once item is in your cart and then again once you pay and makes the purchase not worth the work.
I sometimes miss prime video, but not making so many impulse purchases has been a real positive.
I got Target Circle 360 for a discount as a red card holder and I’ve been very happy with the ultra fast shipping, pick up, and same day delivery options.
the convenience and ease of boredom shopping. i cancelled prime years ago and went from dozens of orders a year, to one for 2024. there are still some things nearly impossible to find elsewhere. if i even go to the site, it's more for research/reviews rather than the actual point of purchase.
Replacing my phone chargers whenever my cat ate them. Used to get the nylon braided chargers from Amazon and order a new one whenever one wore out. Switched to getting them from ebay, then Walmart started stocking them.
For me, the most tempting thing is to order something that is very specific and I would need in a certain timeframe (e.g., themed stickers for a class, specialty dry ingredient for an upcoming meal). I’ve been trying to plan ahead more so I don’t get stuck in those situations, mostly!
I haven't shopped on Amazon at all in weeks and haven't actually missed it. The only reason I've kept my Prime subscription is for the shows my kids like to watch. I really need to pull that plug, though.
Small purchases. I still by physical media. I used to get most of it from Best Buy and then Best Buy stopped. Amazon Prime will let me pre-order any movie and I don't pay shipping.
I'm not certain there's anywhere else I can do that. Wal-Mart, maybe?
Requires more planning ahead. I was doing really well, but then USPS messed up a delivery of a specialist ingredient I had sourced from Etsy for a birthday cake, and I needed a replacement set of magnet stickers. (I also live in a tiny town and my work commute is through tiny places.)
