I've never had their servers go down for me, or at least not to the extent that I'd notice, so I don't really know what Jason has experienced 🤷‍♂️

I’ve used Fastmail for a long time without issues, but a few years ago I moved to Apple iCloud Mail with my own domain name, as I was already paying for iCloud+. Both have been very reliable. I think E2EE works better for storage than for mail, where you need to interact with unencrypted peers.

I don't think this is a good idea. Do it as a fun project by all means, but if you want your mail to get delivered, you probably shouldn't self-host.

@tutaprivacy.bsky.social is similar if you're looking for privacy. They have been attacked before and did go down temporarily as a result. My guess is all the private mail clients kind of have a target on their back. Anyone smaller than google will go down sometimes. It's sort of inevitable.

@fastmail.com is great. I personally think Proton is a lot of security theater around the wrong product, but I’ve generally heard no complaints about fastmail except that it’s not “as secure as Proton.”

Been rock-solid so far, though they cost more than Free(tm), and their cheapest plan limits storage space a bit.
They're based in Europe, if data sovereignty is important to you, too.

I recently moved from Gmail to https://Hey.com with a personal domain, had my Gmail forward there. Personal domain is important in case I want to move again in the future... Didn't want to be stuck. I am also experimenting @fastmail.com it's more work than Hey to set up the rules but more flexible too.

Why aren't you using the Protonmail app? I have literally never had it go down, but I wonder if it has some issue with the mobile browser or something?
