"Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief." - Chris Murphy (read his summary below)
Just to be clear, This Regime wants their actions to deliver the most intensive suffering to the state of extreme or profound pain, distress, starvation or hardship, encompassing both physical and mental anguish on the American people.
He bankrupted his casinos. How do you bankrupt casinos? He sells bibles, sneakers, coins, watches, he's a grifter, snake oil salesman, Open your eyes, people! He should be in a carnival not the presidency!
Of course, but if say, you WANTED to destroy the economy after installing loyalists in every branch of government so that you could execute a bloodless coup...
He literally did. They still voted for him, with a totally incomprehensible mixture of 'we love his honesty, he tells it like it is' and 'he's just saying it for the show, he won't actually do it'!
In addition, it was the mentality that he was going to destroy the people that they don't like and that Trump would not only spare them but make them part of his wealthy boy's club.
Whether the meagerest of them thought they'd get rich through osmosis, or just wanted to "own the libs" to the grandest with ulterior motives of greed & one-upsmanship, they all had some kind of dog in this fight & were so selfish that they didn't care who & what was getting destroyed.
There is plenty of footage & recorded comment of Trump being pro tariffs MANY years ago. With the same 'they are ripping us off' rhetoric. Nothing new, he's finally getting what he yearned for, for some time.
trump wants businesses & world leaders to beg him for mercy. Exemptions. To glorify him. Then he can be their savior. Accept bribes. Tell a Sir story. Be king of the world. Itβs corruption.
Were this author on a student visa, Marco Rubio would apprehend and deport this column's author.
Compared to Rumeysa Ozturk's op-ed (aimed at Tufts admin), the FT author attacks US foreign policy and its authors ('reasonable ground...potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences')
It is the same every time blanket tariffs are enacted, normal people suffer whilst consortiums and other assorted billionaires buy up foreclosed homes and farms on the cheap, their greed has no boundaries
My question: When corporations start individually negotiating, (and by negotiating I mean paying him) with Trump to remove the tariff that affects their company specifically - what do we, the average people, do about it? the lure of lower prices for us is strong. How do we combat this?
This is also how he will use tariffs. He will impose or give relief to States and businesses who kiss his ass and ruin or build their economy using supposed tarriffs in other countries.
I'm still stuck on the stupidity thing. I'm not saying Trump is a smart man, but if your goal is to destroy the economy of an entire country and you're able to realize that goal within 90 days of attaining power, is that stupidity or is that the playbook working?
rapist felon Trump will be celebrated with an unprecedented second UK state visit. Im sure the world will envy little England and its big balls sovereignty sticking it to the man
Republicans in Congress are betraying their constituents and their country by doing nothing while the economy that was in great shape in January 2025 is being flushed down the toilet.
They allow lifetimes of retirement savings to disappear while jobs providing government services are slashed.
True in some sense. Also the tariffs give him extraordinary power to grant exceptions to American businesses and foreign nations and thereby exercise even more control and power via corruption and bribery
Everyone knows that Trump is a moron. I'll be that nearly every GOP member knows that Trump is a moron. They own a huge part of the blame for all that is going on. They know better, but they were too cowardly or self-serving to do anything about it.
The true supporters of the American economic crash.... the new greatest, biggly depression begins.....and it won't stop for years, and many more years is what it will take for a recovery by a just and sane politician....
And these Troglodytes would follow a leader, (the beginnings of herding" and since they were not knowledgeable, they followed the leader everywhere, and served the leader. If the leader went over a hill with an unforeseen cliff, and went over, the rest followed. And that's what his followers do.
Well, for my oped, I want to say for as long as they might live, however, if we trace back the origin of the herd behavior, or the sheep's theory, we go into the caveman era . As these in the The meaning of TROGLODYTE -is a member in antiquity who lived or were reputed to live chiefly in caves.
I agree. However, how do we ensure a non Neanderthal candidate, since the bar and expectations of work history and education has become non existent in most Republican candidates.
i heard once that the uber wealthy capitalists without a conscience love recession. its like a giant sale to them..... properties for pennies on the dollar, extra cheap stock grabs, prices raised that will never come back down, and desparate people willing to work harder for less .... so very sad
I've seen comment that it's to cement his power.
People will swear fealty to him to be 'let off the hook' of tariffs, hence he becomes an almighty king!
The tariffs cover a wide DIVERSITY of products in an attempt to bring EQUITY to world trade with full INCLUSION of scores of countries, even some with more penguins than people!
Funny that they can smell the rank smell across the pond while WSJ/NYT/WAPO are still talking "appetite for risk " as we are zerging the masses here towards "appetite for rich".
i am going with what Chris Murphy said - not stupidity - a plan to bend business to his will. extort businesses like he is doing to academia and law firms.
All those who voted for a man who self inflicted multiple personal bankruptcies are to blame as are those Republicans who fail to stop him. He has been a con man his entire life.
My side has put forth weak and pathetic opponents, and done Absolutely nothing to assure the people that they will be addressing the real issues. The Democrat party is just as much at fault, we have had a clear and defined villain party in our country for the last 20 years, and we tried to play nice
Since our southern border was a big issue - Biden should have aggressively addressed it. Actually, an efficient immigration system should have been implemented long ago.
Dems gotta get with the ticket; no more gentlemen's courtesy & playing by the rules. This requires street fighting. When they go low, we DON'T go high. This is why we need new people who don't default to politics as usual - because they haven't been doing it their whole lives.
Absolutely. π₯Part of how we know that with certainty is they were making up this chart the morning of the press conference. That's why it's so pitiful and insane.
Because they are on board with the plan. Agencies destroyed, small businesses destroyed, massive sell off pennys on the dollar, itβs a shift towards Russia style oligarchy, where they never have to worry about campaigning ever again.

This is not strategic. This is Trumpβs one-note 19th century thought.
Andβ¦ he is punishing investors who benefitted from Bidenβs economy because in Trumpβs twisted fig-sized brain, anyone who benefitted in deserves to be punished for disloyalty.
It doesnβt make sense but there you have it.
If I were looking for a grand strategy, it would be that they (the ultra-rich through Trump) deliberately want to destroy the US as a global power, thinking it will unleash them to operate without regulatory restraint here and weaken Europeβs. Trump is their very useful idiot.
I have a friend, that 100% believes that the problem is that we just donβt have ALL the info on Trumps plan. A Jewish Accountant, veteran whose wife had brain cancer, has NO CONCERNS and thinks Iβm the brainwashed oneβ¦
I'm not convinced. No question his personality traits play a part, but I believe he's aiming to smash it all up as much as he can manage, including the Government.
Then he gets to build it up again.
Hopefully he won't manage to do get far enough that the resulting civil unrest triggers Martial Law.
I really wish people would stop pretending that there is some greater strategy at work. His brain can't handle strategy as intelligent people know it. It just occasionally burps up some idea, then he forces his sycophants to make it happen
FT has written on their philosophy of dark enlightenment before, hereβs a recent Timeβs piece. This is what theyβre doing, and what outcome they seekβthey want to destroy the US economy, rip away your house equity and pensions, to enact a new feudalism.
βThere can be no logic washingβ - a tacit, maybe explicit, admission that the FT previously engaged in such βlogic washingβ in the past, eg intentionally misinforming its readers.
There is a video going around, source unknown, that claims it's all part of an ingenious plan to "reindustrialise" the US and economically subjugate the rest of the world... I assume the purpose is to quiet the fears of the MAGA faithful.
We are going to starve everyone our country owes money to.
They either forgive our National Debt to them or we will begin wartime actions.
It's EXTORTION!
We don't plan to pay our debts just like other Trump Inc. bankruptcies.
Our credit will be shot.
No debt will be payable with US currency.
I agree, but I don't understand what his end-game is. He destroys the country, now what? What is the plan for after? I know he's too stupid to even have a plan, but someone does.
People sell off real assets for pennies on the dollar, rich people scoop them up and become oligarch level rich. They jet off to Dubai, New Zealand or the next friendly haven. There is no plan for an βafterβ for anyone else.
So in other words, they are raping your country for all that they can get, and they will get away with it as most people that could stop him/them are afraid to do anything. And then they'll just leave the wreckage behind.
Trumpβs policy is designed to force global leaders, US-based special interest groups & Republican senators / congressmen to call for the tariffs being dropped.
In return for which Trump will demand praise, obedience, power concessions & staggering amounts of $$$.
The Republicans did let things slide, they actively worked to undermine voters' trust and government efficiency to get to this point. Do you see any of them helping us? No, they are in on it.
Today is the first day in human history when if you say "He's a feckin' idiot" then 98% of the world's population and millions of penguins will know exactly who you are talking about! Brexit was the worst economic decision in 21st century. US "Hold my coat".
the tariffs will ruin the economy. someone needs to reverse the trend. this is no excuse error of judgement.
the POTUS should not have these decision making authority that constitutionally belongs in Congress. Dems are complicit in this "strong" president hoax
The USA since the end of WW2 as absorbed unequal tariffs from europe and others because we felt they needed the help after a devastating war. We have done this to our detriment now to the point of national bankruptcy. I for one say enough is enough.
Have you seen the interest rate the US now has to pay to service the national debt since the announcement of tariffs? Itβs ballooned from under 4% to over 4.5% in a week.
Seriously, if your top concern is the national debt, youβd be π― against inflationary tariffs.
I look forward to seeing the queues in Supermarkets as it takes hours to process a payment (rather than the ~10 minutes it takes with Bitcoin now, as barely anyone uses it). Crypto doesn't handle that number of transactions. It's best used for small numbers of large transactions.

Putin 2022: decided to invade Ukraine
Xi 2019/2020 (laboratory or not): decision to ignore/conceal outbreak for weeks
Trump 2025: tariffs (if in place for a longer time)
No single men should be able to do so. If so, they do it.
They allow lifetimes of retirement savings to disappear while jobs providing government services are slashed.
2) Destabilization:
Sink the economy
Damage foreign relations
Weaken the military
Remember "The Reality Based Community?" ... I do.
People like them and others laid the groundwork for the hellscape we are in now.
But wait... The FBI is run by an eff-ing moron as well, so they probably won't investigate any of this either, despite the law'n'stuff...

Still do...

These are DEI Tariffs:
The tariffs cover a wide DIVERSITY of products in an attempt to bring EQUITY to world trade with full INCLUSION of scores of countries, even some with more penguins than people!
And they do not give a damn about any of us including MAGA.
Biggest confidence game in history.
Every single one of them.
They had plenty of time to fix up the law so this could not happen.
I 100% blame all americans for this, every single one.
This all makes sense if you realize who the Trump administration is working for.
Constitutionally, Congress NEVER intended to delegate the power to the President to tax us in a magnitude on par with the entire federal budget.
Very nice to see
These are #Republican #Tariffs.
