If you really want to learn the vim way, avoid plugins. Most of them are actually against vim philosophy.

Mini is great in that you can install just the big repo, and slowly, at times, start checking out what's in there. Since the plugins don't intend to compete with others in features, you can get less overwhelmed. But TBH, what sets it apart from others is the documentation. Best I've ever seen.

I tried the Lazy starter pack, that was pretty overwhelming! Now back to basics indeed with just the plugin manager and a couple of plugins.

100% this. Go with the defaults till you hit some friction. Only then go looking for a config change or plugin to solve it. If you go with the kitchen sink of plugins fro the start, you end up having no idea what they all do, why they exist, or how to use them.

A big reason I moved to Helix was because I wanted the general workflow of vim but didn’t want to futz around with plugins and configs, but occasionally I do get jealous of some neovim plugin

So when you have an Elixir test file open. How do you run all the tests in that file for example? I've tried Helix and liked its philosophy, but it seemed that those basic scenarios are not covered at all. Just text editing.

I just switch tabs in my terminal (via keyboard shortcuts) and run the tests there. You can also do `:sh ` within Helix and it'll give you a nice window popup with the output. I'm really using it for the built in editing and how easy it is to set up an LSP.

Interesting! Ultimately I would choose Doom emacs over a vim framework/starter kit, but if I'm building it myself, I find vim an easier system to understand. I found doom/spacemacs to be too unstable as well.

Yeah, I've been through that process, ultimately I bounced off. Same for multiple other emacs/vim distros. My goal here is to do it old-school and make exactly the editor that I want.
