I have a case right now representing a tenant where the landlord posts signs they call "motivational" telling tenants to "stop being lazy" and "racism is an excuse" and "get a job" and I just want to talk to this landlord

sounds like anyone talking to him should be recording him at the same time. I'm betting that not long from now you'll be filing one or more discrimination cases against him.
my landlord has an egregious shaming sign that the office puts out front a few days after the first of each month wrt paying rent on time. i can't remember it exactly, but my jaw was on the floor the first time i saw it.

What a fucking awful landlord (to be honest, I'm not one who believes ALAB because my mom's a landlady, but I get it because it's a structural criticism rather than a personal one).
What does the lease say about maintenance & is it legal in their state? I used to work in apartment management & had to learn this information to be able to say what's our responsibility and what the tenant's responsibility.
I kid you not, a lawyer in Washington argued to the State Supreme Court the eviction moratorium violated the 13th amendment because it made landlords slaves.
i almost wonder if there's something in the Evian water landlords are inevitably drinking, this feels like the labor equivalent to "reverse racism" arguments. "excuse me, it is so fucking classist that it violates my human rights to force me to house some yucky poor that won't pay me :("
The landlord is very cunning, playing on the sensitive string of these issues, but I was frankly impressed by him, apart from his exploitation of the tenant 🫣😅
Landlord is saying that maintenance should be tenants' responsibility because it "builds character" and teaches tenants to "stop making excuses" and a tenant wrote to this landlord saying "we may be Black but we're not inmates" and that broke me. That response fucking broke me.
Land Lords think they are Plantation Owners and they 'lease their slaves out to other bosses'. Amazed they don't negotiate directly with the bosses, but making obscene profits from 'rent' works just as well.
When I rented 20 years ago, I negotiated a sort of building superintendent job from my landlord. He was mostly absentee and it was easier if I called plumbers and such (bills went to him), so he gave me a rent discount. I could even bill him $10/hour+materials for work I did myself.
Landlord is arguing only some parts of the lease were intended to be legally binding. It's a long story. Suffice to say this landlord's lawyer and I don't get along well.

why do i have the feeling they consider being a landlord a "job" despite it not meeting their oddly specific standards for a "real job"
'Indirect ownership'.
Win-win.
ain't what the law says!
it build character :))))
