We remember Comrade Laika and what she did for humanity. I believe that the Soviet scientists did not choose willingly for her to suffer. May all animal testing someday be nothing but cruel history.
Jonathan Coulton wrote a song called Space Doggity that sounds whimsical from the name, but let me tell you it is not. I've listened to it exactly once and it made me sob. So while I consider it good and effective art, I honestly can't recommend.
Knowing that Belka and Strelka not only survived but went on to birth “pupniks” one of which was given to the Kennedy children by Khrushchev as a peace offering soothes the pain of knowing about Laika
She has the uncertain “airplane ears” in this picture, presumably because someone said the word “rocket” where she could hear it, without spelling it out instead. Still fluffy and adorable!
she ran away! i hope she had a nice earth-bound life. Substitute for Missing Bobik went on a trip up to the Karman line and made it back down to the ground safely.
A weird symptom of hangovers I get is I get really emotional. During a bad one I went to the pub to read a book and nearly started bawling when one shirt story was from Laika's POV
