any of yall remember in school when they explained the checks and balances of the united states government and if you said "what if one guy gets control of all of it" they were just like "oh that will never happen"

re: impeachment specifically, our teacher just kinda threw his hands in the air because a new Monica Lewinsky related headline happened every day before our class on the topic, it was _that year_
And it wasn't until fairly recently that the results of Pres primaries were legally binding. Before that the parties ignored the voters preferences and ran who they wanted. That's why dangerous populists like Lindbergh or Father Coughlin, despite their popularity, never had a chance at being elected
When the framers wrote the Constitution they built in as many safeguards as they could think of. Consider that political parties had yet to exist. There was no such thing as political campaigns. People did not run for office; they were nominated. The people did not even select Pres candidates.
"you mean this one guy is completely immune to any consequences and also sometimes he can just hand wave crimes of certain people he wants?" "yes, its enshrined in the constitution" "🤔"
I appreciate Hamilton whose whole thing was “man is corrupt, this shit will totally happen” while Jefferson was like “nah don’t need your constitution man is inherently virtuous”
In 2017 I knew Trump would try to make himself a dictator, but I honestly couldn't figure out how he'd be able to do it. Hitler's seizure of power was all legit under the law, but those tools don't exist in the US.
I didn't consider the "just pretend he is and everybody will let him" option.
well Senators take an oath to defend the Constitution. nothing, especially not yearly free money for your entire life from the worst people alive, could ever make them betray that

Can't remember the exact name of it, but in retrospect our teacher was so fucking conservative (for back then).
But yeah, really feels like those classes were kinda a total fucking waste of time, seeing how it was effectively the honor system.
And I say that as someone who enjoyed social studies type classes.
Like what the fuck do you even talk about?
"Oh, then he'll be impeached and removed."
"What if slightly more than a third of the Senate refuses to do that?"
"Would never happen."

Like that was 8th grade and I remember it vividly cause it seemed so obviously wrong to me.
