This will *always* be the story, until the recruitment profile changes. Did Spurs spend money on transfers? Yes. But, they have to start spending like they are a top 4 revenue club. Building a top 10 roster, but expecting them to be top 4 is a reasonable challenge when you aren't printing money.

Cannot ignore the logical 1st step in player recruitment process. I would wager my paycheck that if Ange was told, we can spend as much as Arsenal on payroll, that he wouldn't say "no thank you, let's spend less." He wants the players he is getting because of the financial parameters he was given.

That is entirely guesswork on your part. And it's also natural to have financial parameters. But what really seems to be happening is Ange want players of the Gray and Bergvall ilk and to build a team of young players. There's no point paying them big wages for the sake of it.

I like our players, but that is because they are our players. From a talent standpoint, are Ars/Liv/Che/City going to take veterans, Yves, Maddison, Porro, Solanke, Vicario, Romero, Richy, Timo, Rodrigo, Son and exchanging them in their starting lineups full-time? Not many exchanges would happen.

Come on. You can still acquire players like Gray and Bergvall to build with, while having payroll flexibility. It's not guess work. It's logic. Spurs have a financial advantage over most clubs, but they price themselves out of impact transfers by choice. The numbers do not lie.

There is also one issue nobody talks about : the highly exaggerated transfer fees and wages which cause bankruptcy among European clubs ! Why should a chairman accept to pay what KDB, Haaland or Mbappe want ? Some clubs have fallen into bankruptcy because of insane wages and transfer fees...

I know exactly how Levy would respond. He'd point to our net spend on transfers, which is the fourth highest of any club in the last five years (and not too far off that over a ten-year period), and he'd then set that in context of the stadium cost. What isn't written about enough, however, is wages

Exactly. Spurs are spending transfer fees, which means they are trying something. But they are trying to get elite levels out of decent to good players. We have the #1 facility in the lg, play in London, have an exciting way of playing. What stops top transfer players from coming to Spurs? Wages.

That graph is from 22/23, so before the full financial benefit of the new stadium. Even then, look at the capacity we had in our wage budget (i.e. to attract better players) and then compare to our rivals. We can match most other clubs for transfer fees, but we won't match them on wages

I think he’s banked on reaping the benefits of other clubs being penalised by FFP. He’d respond to the point about wages by pointing to the stricter rules coming into place in 25/26. But our rivals just find ways to circumvent those rules. It’s a reckoning that will never happen

The graph is also before we trimmed Kane, Lloris, Dier, Perisic and other senior players from the squad, and largely replaced them with teenagers and or first-team players on much lower wages. This summer there was a huge amount of room in wage the budget - and we didn't use it
