i can’t find the link now, but a republican rep wanted to eliminate restaurant food safety inspections with the argument that if a restaurant was unsanitary and enough people ate there and got sick and died, word eventually would get around and people would stop eating there.
Regulations are a reaction and correction to a known problem to protect the American people.
No one is sitting around dreaming up ways to cut profits like they're competing in a "Who's The Biggest Dick" board game
Corporations are not bound by safety regulations unless they are forced into them. Corporations are bound by profits. Given the choice between more profit or more safety, the vast majority of corporations choose more profits. It's called capitalism, not consumerism.
Amid market failure and greed, something's gotta gov. I have always relied on the kindness of strictures. My mama told me, you'd better dhaperone. Govern or give in. The potential for tyranny is to be tethered, not weathered. Harnesed we is the best polity. Etc.
Greed motivates the addition of melamine to baby formula poisoning infants. Corn syrup to honey, canola sold as olive oil & worst of all, Cataloupe Caligula was sold to voters in the US as some sort of stable genius.
