There's a conversation going around about whether you can use people's gameplay footage without permission
Legally none of us own this stuff but ethically work still went into recording it and you don't just take other people's work. If you don't ask permission then at minimum make sourcing clear

It really bothers me when people just nab someone else's effort and time, it's just rude as heck!!!
For a while people seemed to use WorldOfLongplays for that but I don't think it's actually made *for* that
Still may do it one day.
I'd gladly support that!! It would be SO helpful for content creation
I'm currently working on a total overhaul of Spriters Resource to unify our database. My hope is that, when done & settled, a video site will be on the cards and easy to actually create from the new foundation. How to financially support it though is the big question mark!
I consider it a part of preservation, it should be accessible to everyone.

Though a more general service would be nice to see.

From a moral standpoint - agree to at least give credit.
From a legal standpoint - most videos are under the Standard YouTube License. No reuse without permission or fair use.
Where it gets trickier... (cont.)
So, the game studio, not the player...
No link in the description to begin with, either.
Y'all don't need to watermark a 10 year old game, 🌽E
Ethically I'm fine. I gave on screen and verbal credit in the video. Y'all taking and didn't even watch the video.
Honestly, U can fuck right off w/ that BS dude. I didn't claim in the title I had a bunch of new footage or stuff. Nintendo Life is NOT the reason I got views. Most of the video was official trailers
I can't imagine giving permission only to find out someone is awful after the video's been up. Likewise, I'd expect other people's wishes.
It's actually so easy, idk why someone is acting like it's not.
And whenever I mention it, people just say 'but he made the game, duh'
Ethically he's an asshole.
I also have a stream archive and if anyone wants to use my footage from that, I dont really care.
It's a really great practise that more people should do, with a tiny bit of digging you can splice together anything from trailers.
The creator of the derivative work has IP rights to that work, but they don't own any rights to the original work itself, AKA the video game
You should own your gameplay footage
I wouldn't go down a legal path if someone takes footage uncredited but I like to think we can all respect each other's work enough for this to not need to be a conversation
As far as permission and assuming you credit...I don't see it as a terrible crime if you *don't* ask, but I also don't see a good reason why *wouldn't* ask, so it feels like you should. I would ask for sure.
IE if the script calls for very specific footage and someone else has it, can be easier to use with permission or credit than record
Kinda like citing a quote source in an essay
That seems close to the same thing
If I need to use another person’s footage, I have a card on the top left of the screen displaying Footage: (name of person who owns footage).
Pretty much everyone watching the video will know exactly who put their efforts into gathering that footage.
Do I have a button on the YouTube backend that lets me take down a person's video if they use my footage without asking or giving credit? Yes.
Do I push it? Maaaaaybe.
I've never not given permission to anyone who asked. Heck, I might send you the source file! Just ask :)
The least you can AND should expect is honouring the creator and leaving credit or shoutouts.

The AV card stock software is in Japanese, but you can use it seamlessly with OBS.
Ethics aside, it's just not authentic. How am I suppose to believe this person's feelings & emotions when they didn't provide proof of their own experience?
It seems weird to me to not grab your own footage if you aren’t using stuff provided by official PR. And in our modern era, it has never been easier to get footage of older games thanks to the vast array of emulation options.
