It’s not unexpected for reassortment to occur when both highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (subtype H5N1) and low pathogenic avian influenza virus (many subtypes, including with N9) are circulating at high levels in wild birds at the same time. Remains to be seen how its phenotype has changed.
