Vaginal speculum (c.1820) used to apply leeches to a woman’s cervix to remove excess blood, which doctors believed caused localized afflictions such as tumors or inflammation. This speculum used a scissor-like action to expand. It locked open, freeing the physician’s hands to apply the leeches.

I'd already had an IUD insertion w/ only NSAIDs a couple years prior, so I was pretty sure that was a lie... Yet it was still unpleasant to a surprising degree.
Love how medicine treats us, really. 🫠
Me now: Knowledge is a curse

Leeches absolutely have valid medical uses today, but they're also used by non-medical practitioners in some pretty wild and dangerous ways.
Time to go and find some good old cough syrup.
