Also worried that the fandoms of dystopian fiction, such as Warhammer 40K, are infested with nazis who don't get the satire and therefore it's dangerous to get involved in that fandom.
I feel this picture. As a kid I liked dystopian fiction, probably because the good guys mostly won (except 1984).
Now I know a lot more history, sociology and political science. And now, I look at the world and shudder. There is a hole in the human soul that looks for the easy out. There be dragons
1984 has an appendix about "newspeak" that talks about it & Oceania in the past tense, so while Winston's story ends on a defeat the book itself still suggests that the good guys eventually won at an undetermined date after the story.
It's nice to know that even Orwell couldn't leave us in Big Brother's authoritarian hellscape. Sadly, I think the unappended version matches realpolitik better.
Brave New World - you're guaranteed a job and role, you're literally designed to do it well and feel happy and fulfilled doing it, and you have endless games, media, and consequence-free sex provided to fill your off hours.
How's this worse than what we've got, again?
(That was sarcasm. Sorta.)
Agree the scripts are terrible, the plot holes obvious, the story arcs are excessive, character development is superficial & the netflix generations deserve better writers...
We're living in the most excessive & absurd story arc imaginable where civilians are being obliterated in real time & while many others have lost their sense of humanity.
