Is there a criminal statute that covers firing inspectors general? I believe the remedy for breaking that law (if the courts were inclined to enforce it) would be restoring the IGs to their jobs, not prosecuting the President.

I think the ruling doesn't mean that the acts aren't illegal, just that the president has immunity and can'tbe charged with a crime. He can still be impeached by Congress.

DOJ's IG, Michael Horowitz, was not fired (tho they expected they likely would be).

This is significant for a number of reasons, not least that Chuck Grassley SHOULD be the loudest Senator criticizing these firings. But Horowitz is the one his Committee oversees.

The IG for Veterans Affairs is among those fired. As WaPo notes, Michael Missal had a tangible effect on a Biden effort that was fucking up access to care (and for obvious reasons, the VA's IG can directly affect treatment).

One route to combat this, then, is to get Veterans groups pushing back.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought a POTUS first has to put a request to Congress to fire an IG 30 days in advance. And then Congress has to approve or disapprove it. He can't just fire them on the spot.
